Canberra and the district

Parliament House
Guy’s Cross is an ideal base for those wishing to explore further afield in the district. After a footweary day slogging around the sights it is a quiet haven to take your shoes off and get your feet up.
All the attractions of Canberra are within a 15 -30 minute drive and the airport is 15 minutes away. Braidwood is a charming town about 50 minutes away and Bungendore village 20 minutes. Bungendore Woodworks gallery is a place for next level carpentry, extraordinary skills on display and a fascinating 'hanging pillar' roof. (picture right) Great cafes and restaurants are recommended at both places.
Parliament House is a popular destination and especially interesting if Parliament is sitting. I suppose!
I have selected just a few of the most popular attractions but of course there are many more that may appeal.

Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) is 40 minutes away at Tidbinbilla. To me it's a bit of a wow place where you can explore Australia's role in space and space exploration. It is part of NASA's Deep Space Network, a global network that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions exploring the Solar System and beyond. Including Voyager 1 the most distant human made object now 25 billion kms away.
The visitor centre there is open Tuesday to Sunday.

Nearby Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is also a popular place to explore the forests and the wildlife of the region with an opportunity to encounter all sorts of good stuff: koalas, platypuses, (platypii?) several species of macropods, waterbirds and... more!
(you would be super lucky to see this rare Corroboree frog!)
Here goes for Captains Flat. I'll bet nobody else promotes this town!
But, well worth a visit. Country pub, serves dinner if you're lucky. Old mine closed in 1964 worth wandering around to witness old mining methods, terrible mineral pollution and history in the raw. An adventure 20 minutes away.

The many local wineries might take your fancy or a dodgy jaunt on a bike at the world class mountain biking facility at Mt Stromlo.

The federally administered Parliamentary triangle on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin is 20-25 minutes from Guy's Cross and makes a great excursion. Important sites here include: the National Archives, the National Gallery and its wonderful sculpture garden, the High Court, the Questacon Science Museum, Old Parliament House which is now a Museum of Democracy and other 'you beaut' sites.
Lake Burley Griffin in the centre of the city is formed by the impoundment of the Molonglo River. Traffic free paths around the lake make it easy to walk or cycle (or hire an electric scooter, if you can work it out) to visit the main points of interest.
The Australian War Memorial, on the other side of the lake, makes a very thought provoking visit.

I could have put a picture of a tiger or something but I reckon a cool, cranky cotton top tamarin is a better advert for the Canberra zoo. Which in my opinion is better than Taronga at Sydney.
